Key Metrics and What they Mean

Excitement Index and Excitement Average: The primary use for these metrics is in determining how exciting a match is, either in real time or after the fact. They also tell us how close the games of a match are, creating predictive value.

Clutch Factor: A combination of leverage and the winner for each point. Essentially, it is the player’s “score” for the match. While a useful tool for a single match or tournament, it does tend to regress to the mean.

Serve and Return Excitement Average:

These metrics divide  Excitement Average between a player's serve and return games. It helps to describe the flow of a match. Over time, they help to evaluate a player's ability and have strong predictive value.

CFOE Rating: A player's Clutch Factor, adjusted to the expectation for the point. This isolates conditions from performance for evaluation.

Excitement Index Information Center

Our tennis dataset includes nearly 90,000 matches from 182 tournaments, from the Grand Slam, Masters 1000, 500, and 250-level events on each tour and the Olympic Games. The Tableau table below shows general and Excitement Index information for all of those matches in an interactive display.
